Job Title: Patients Support Officer

Reports to: Program Manager
Position Location: The position is located at the UCCF Office in Kampala, with some occasional travels where necessary

The Uganda Child Cancer Foundation (UCCF) is a Non-government organization that was founded mainly by the Uganda Cancer Institute staff, Well-wishers and parents of children with cancer, and other concerned individuals. It was formed to support children and young person’s suffering cancer, by providing direct treatment and social support to children made vulnerable by limited resources, and to advocate for cancer control. UCCF is working mainly with the young people in schools to raise awareness about cancer with the support from the Uganda Cancer Institute and Ministry of Health.

Qualifications:

University degree in Social sciences or Working towards tertiary qualifications in health promotion, public health, communication, marketing, allied health (e.g. Dietitian, Exercise Physiologist) or other relevant field and/or equivalent.

Duration: 12 months with potential for extension based on availability of funds.

Job Purpose: To implement UCCF patient’s support and cancer awareness activities. This position is to provide support for children with Cancer while at the hospital and community. The position will work across all the four   key  programs; Patients support, Cancer education and awareness, Advocacy, Mentorship and survivorship.

The patients support program is a supplementary initiative to Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) and other service providers who support children with cancer.  The post focuses on access to cancer care services, promotion of hygiene and good sanitation through WASH program, healthy eating and physical activity for children and young people from birth to 18 years of age.

The initiative is delivered in key settings throughout Uganda. Settings include:  The Uganda Cancer Institute, Children Caring about Cancer Schools -3C schools, and homes/institutions supporting children with cancer. This position will provide support to all UCCF programs as a link to the main goal of the organization.  This will be based on program requirements at the time and priorities may change according to program needs.

The position will be responsible for supporting delivery of components of the UCCF patients support program to the community in a pre-determined geographic area, in collaboration with existing stakeholders in cancer control like; UCI and Uganda Cancer Society.

The role is a vital link between UCCF, Uganda Cancer Institute and the Ministry of Health and works closely with members of the UCS team to deliver programs in order to fulfill our strategy.

Experience:  1 years of experience in; working with children and young people especially those with special needs, conducting community needs assessment, counseling and guidance, liaison activities, stakeholder engagements. Including social media skills, abilities, knowledge and Strong proven innovative play ,  and mentoring skills. 

Skills Abilities and Knowledge;

  1. Experience and skills in project work, or program delivery, including demonstrated ability to plan, implement and evaluate challenges or program and report on project/program outcomes.
  2. Ability to establish and maintain strategic partnerships with community (Individuals), key stakeholders and facilitate collaborative action.
  3. Sound organizational and computer skills, and the capacity to successfully manage several tasks concurrently to meet tight deadlines.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication 
  5. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a cross cultural context, and the ability to work with and engage young people, Children, their families and other stakeholders.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with minimal direction and as part of a team.
  7. Able to engage the children in activities such as Art & Craft and board games etc
  8. Able to follow up patients during their treatment and advocate for proper treatment
  9. Able to handle oneself in a mature and professional manner across cultures
  10. The aim of this program is also to assist a child to keep up with his/her school work and help the child by alleviating his/her anxiety over academic demands.
  11. Able to coach the child for two hours per week, for a period of one year, The aim of this is to assist a child to keep up with his/her school work and help the child by alleviating his/her anxiety over academic demands.
  12. Engage children with cancer in structured play activities at the hospital ward, outpatient clinic or Enjoy interacting and playing with children.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conducting patients support baseline surveys and supporting the UCCF team in joint planning.
  2. Working with children with cancer and engage young people and their families to create positive change in cancer control through UCCF advocacy and awareness programs.
  3. Conduct the basic hygiene and sanitation –WASH education to care givers and children admitted at the UCI
  4. Engaging children in activities such as Art ,Craft and play activities
  5. Following up patients during their treatment and advocate for proper treatment
  6. The aim of this program is also to assist a child to keep up with his/her school work and help the child by alleviating his/her anxiety over academic demands.
  7. Able to coach the child for two hours per week, for a period of one year, The aim of this is to assist a child to keep up with his/her school work and help the child by alleviating his/her anxiety over academic demands.
  8. Engage children with cancer in structured play activities at the hospital ward, outpatient clinic or Enjoy interacting and playing with children.
  9. Providing psychosocial support services to identified children and families affected by cancer
  10. Making program reports and work plans during the year
  11. Undertake the role in a manner appropriate to the cultural context and within the local and  legal framework of Uganda
